From July 4 to 7, Ms. Wu Yunfei, Programme Coordinator, and Ms. Fan Beibei, Communication Officer, from the UNESCO International Research and Training Centre for Rural Education (INRULED), conducted an on-site study in Altay, Xinjiang, to explore best practices in rural skills development and expand pathways for the international communication of rural education.
The delegation visited the Jiangbutasi Village Public Space, operated by the Green Xinjiang, to gain a systematic understanding of its initiatives in community engagement, skills development, public participation, ecological conservation, and environmental education. Special attention was given to the center’s efforts in safeguarding and revitalizing Hasake (Kazakh) intangible cultural heritage, as well as its innovative approaches to raising sustainability awareness through local knowledge and practices.

During the visit, INRULED team engaged in face-to-face discussions with villagers and participated in hands-on workshops, such as Hasake (Kazakh) traditional embroidery and handmade black soap making. These culture-based learning activities demonstrated their unique role in empowering rural women, facilitating intergenerational knowledge transfer, promoting eco-friendly lifestyles, and strengthening community cohesion. Additionally, the initiatives showcased a sustainable development model that enhances local livelihoods while reducing overgrazing pressures.

This study provided INRULED team with valuable field insights for its research and practice in rural lifelong learning and skills development. It also enriched the INRULED’s repository of China’s stories for international communication, highlighting the integration of culture and educational development.
